Mark L McDermott MD
Dr McDermott’s current title is Professor of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University’s Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Dr McDermott completed his
undergraduate, medical and residency training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He then completed a competitively awarded National Institutes of Health post-doctoral
fellowship in corneal physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This was followed by a clinical fellowship in Cornea/External disease at the
Eye Institute at the same institution.
While at Wayne State University he has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts concerning all aspects of corneal and anterior segment disease.
As a faculty member he has served as residency program director, and vice chairman. He serves as a Medical Director for the Midwest Eye Bank and Transplantation Center.
He is section editor for Cornea in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.
He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has been an invited lecturer throughout North America, Europe, Japan,
and Latin America. His clinical practice includes high-risk corneal transplantation, complex cataract surgery, and ocular surface disorders. His research interests include
corneal epithelial wound healing, ocular microbiology, and models of corneal inflammation.
